"When I was 12 I went to school and I had my hair in braids. I went in super happy and excited but my teacher told me that my hair was ugly, disgusting and wasn't school protocol...The Halo Code is a campaign pledge for schools and businesses to adopt in order for black people to feel comfortable wearing their natural hair without judgement."
Gail Waterman comments: I’m excited to announce that Watermans has adopted The Halo Code, the UK's first Black hair code. No Black employee should have to change their natural or protective hairstyle in order to thrive at work. We hope that the Halo Code will move us one step closer to a world free from discrimination, where all Black members of our community have their identities fully recognised and celebrated. Watermans also demonstrates this throughout social media and our website and commercials.
The Code: "Our workplace champions the right of staff to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our Black employees’ racial, ethnic, cultural, and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance. We celebrate Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps. In this workplace, we recognise and celebrate our colleagues’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on an employee's ability to succeed."
